Apparently Marvelous Temples

Architects give us temples in which something marvelous is obviously going on. Actually, practically nothing is going on.

Kurt Vonnegut

As I walked around this part of town, through the symphony hall and its echoey unpopulated lower levels, past the science museum with its shadowy draughty corridor leading to the entrance & then around the elevated playground in the shadow of the apartment buildings, I couldn’t help but wonder who exactly cities are for.

Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy the funky lines, flashy angles and everything else that goes into creating a visually interesting building.

But I also long to know whether the people who use these buildings feel the same way about the interiors as some of us who just pass by on the street might feel about the exteriors.
