Manchester Cathedral

You’d be forgiven that I somehow found Jesus this summer since there has been such a spiritual bent to recent posts. Truth of the matter is that, much like the equivalent temple or shrine in the East, something about the intent of buildings of this nature appeal to me.

The idea that a space exists for quiet contemplation and reflection pleases me; I think that being a properly rounded human being should involve lots of the former and plenty of the latter. Even an atheist needs a place to think in peace from time to time about the nature of being and what our one purpose in life might actually be.

The design aspect of holy buildings also deeply impresses me, which I get is kind of the point – imagine being a 14th century peasant, travelling to a big city for the first time and seeing York Minster rising up out of the earth before you. You’d have conniptions. Or a conversion.

(I’m guessing the second was preferable.)

These shots I took of Manchester Cathedral over the summer were more inspired by the interior than the exterior. Light intermingling with colours and shapes, that kind of thing. God moving over the waters sort of a deal.
